Mrs J Garner

Governor

Newly appointed in 2025, Mrs Joy Garner practised as a Biomedical Scientist, specialising in Haematology, in North Yorkshire and the Tees Valley for 16 years, also undertaking locums across the UK, along with a period with GlaxoSmithKline plc at their Genval Centre on Clinical Research Trials. Much of her training was undertaken in Newcastle Hospitals, and at Northumbria University.

Following retraining, and gaining an MA (Ed.), she taught sciences in the North East for 10 years; subsequently project managing a pan-London education project for the London Development Agency (LDA), then setting up a University Pathway Programme for overseas students, both on behalf of a UK Education and Training company. She then travelled widely for the organisation, spending a decade working in Business Development, primarily with the Asian markets, including across China, India and Nepal.

Joy hopes to use her mix of skills in Sciences, Education and Business Management to contribute to improving health outcomes in the region, and has a particular interest in rural communities and mental health.

She is now semi-retired, though does do some international Student Counselling for university entry, and Language Immersion placements locally.
On a personal level, she has two adult children and a husband who is a keen cyclist.

Joy has served as a Charity Trustee, is a former member of Soroptimist International, and was invited to participate in Women in Public Policy during her time in London, as a result of her work with the LDA.
