Our infectious diseases unit was the first in the UK to treat patients with COVID-19.
Specialist services
The Great North Trauma and Emergency Centre at the RVI houses our emergency department (A&E). We see around 138,000 new patients each year. The major trauma centre receives patients from as far afield as Cumbria to the Scottish Borders.
Our maternity unit and midwifery led Newcastle Birthing Centre helps to bring over 6,000 babies into the world each year. It is one of the UK’s largest maternity departments. As a specialist referral centre for maternity services we provide the highest standards of specialist care for women and their families.
The RVI is home to the Great North Children’s Hospital, one of only 14 major children’s medical centres in the UK. Our Children’s services provide treatment for children and young people across the whole of the north of England.
The neurosciences department cares for people with illnesses affecting the nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. Patients travel from across the North East and UK for pioneering treatment.
Our women’s health unit is a centre for excellence and cares for women with a range of gynaecological conditions. Our team of dedicated gynaecological surgeons at the centre specialise in benign and malignant conditions.
