Professor Alexander Phillips is a Consultant Surgeon & Head of Department for oesophago-gastric surgery at Newcastle’s RVI.
Professor Phillips qualified from Newcastle University and undertook his basic surgical training in Norwich before moving to Oxford and the North East of England to complete his Higher Surgical Training.
He was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon with a specialist interest in Oesophago-gastric surgery in 2015 and is Honorary Professor of Oesophagogastric Surgery and Surgical Education at Newcastle University. He provides both general surgical and specialty on call and his major commitment is cancer surgery and therapeutic endoscopy.
Research
Professor Phillips’ clinical research interest lies in the management of oesophageal and gastric cancer, peri-operative optimisation of patients and survivorship. He has authored over 120 peer reviewed publications and presented internationally on the topics of both oesophago-gastric cancer and surgical education, and acts as a supervisor for trainees undertaking an MD or PhD.
Professor Phillips’ other main interest is in in surgical education. He has completed a Masters and MD in the field of clinical education and has a number of undergraduate and postgraduate roles. He is the undergraduate lead for surgery for the Newcastle University MBBS course and sits on the Board of Medical Studies.
Additionally he is the Director for the Faculty of Surgical Trainers at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He also represents the trust on the Educational Research Management group at Newcastle University and chairs the education committee for the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus.
