Mr Steven Powell is a Paediatric Otolaryngologist at the Great North Children’s Hospital and Freeman Hospital.
Mr Steven Powell graduated from Newcastle University in 2001 with distinction. He undertook both basic surgical training and higher surgical training in otolaryngology in the North East.
During his training, he developed a specialist interest in paediatric ENT and undertook a one-year fellowship at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia where he trained in all aspects of paediatric ENT.
Mr Powell’s main specialist interest is the management of children with airway disorders. He is part of the paediatric airway multi-disciplinary team and lead for paediatric ENT, based at the Great North Children’s Hospital since 2016.
Mr Powell is the Secretary of the British Association for Paediatric Otolaryngology and a member of the ENT Surgical Specialty Board of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He regularly teaches on national paediatric ENT courses.

Research
Mr Powell undertook his research training at the University of Leeds and completed a Master’s degree in health research, with distinction. He has research interests across several areas: tracheostomy; tonsil disease; airway stenosis and respiratory papillomatosis.
Mr Powell was the national chair of the NICE Airway Intervention Register (AIR) from 2015-2018, examining the use of balloons in the treatment of airway stenosis, and is a member of the national AIR steering committee for respiratory papillomatosis.
