Specialist services
The trauma and emergency centre at the RVI houses our emergency department (A&E), which sees around 138,000 patients each year, some from as far afield as Cumbria or the Scottish Borders.
Our maternity unit and midwifery-led Newcastle birthing centre is one of the UK’s largest maternity departments and helps to bring over 6,000 babies into the world each year. As a specialist referral centre for maternity services we provide the highest standards of care for women and their families.
The RVI is also home to the Great North Children’s Hospital, one of only 14 major children’s medical centres in the UK, providing treatment for children and young people across the whole of the north of England and some internationally.
The neurosciences department cares for people with illnesses affecting the nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. Patients travel from across the country for pioneering treatment here.
Our women’s health unit is a centre for excellence and cares for women with a range of gynaecological conditions. Our team of dedicated gynaecological surgeons at the centre specialise in benign and malignant conditions.
