Cycle parking

You can find more information below about cycle parking including tips about securing your bike and cycle compounds at the RVI and the Freeman Hospital.

Bronze cycle parking is available for patients and visitors to use. Silver and gold cycle parking is a paid for service for staff.

Cycle parking provision

The three categories of cycle parking are as follows.

Bronze level parking
  • Free to use for staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Some cycle racks are covered with a cycle shelter or using natural building cover.
  • Predominantly a ‘Sheffield stand’ (trust standard) as this allows the bike frame to be securely.
  • Please use silver or gold secure rated D-Lock and also lock at least of the wheels to the stand.
  • We would always recommend using a D-lock for frame and cable lock for wheels.
  • CCTV coverage is variable.
  • Located near main entrances.

Silver level parking (staff only)
  • Access and use by staff only.
  • Secure and covered cycle compound with multiple racks to lock the bike to.
  • Fobs are non-transferrable. The transport and travel team can deactivate fobs.
  • Access to silver level parking on multiple sites.
  • Full CCTV coverage internally and externally.
    Leaver lists checked to turn off fobs and maintain staff cycle security.

Gold level parking (staff only)
  • Available to staff only.
  • Cancellation available at any time on return of the locker key.
  • Safe, secure, and personal storage for your bicycle
  • Located close to entrances.
  • No need to lock the bike and able to leave any accessories in situ.

  • At the entrance to the education centre

Bronze level cycle parking

  • End of the road that leads round the hospital site. It is opposite the car park behind the education centre.

Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC) and renal services

Bronze level cycle parking

  • To the left looking at the entrance to the Northern Centre for Cancer Care and Renal Services.
  • Next to the NCCC and Renal service car park. It is opposite the entrance to the NCCC and renal services.

Disablement services and ward block view

Gold level cycle parking

  • In the car park of the disablement centre. This is at the back of the building.
  • At the front of the Freeman Hospital education centre.

Bronze level cycle parking

Located under the ambulance and vehicle access to musculo services outpatients department.

Cardiothoracic block and IOT

Gold level cycle parking

  • Near the cardiothoracic entrance opposite the cardiothoracic centre car park.
  • Next to the entrance of the physiotherapy department.

Bronze level cycle parking

  • Outside the main entrance to the cardiothoracic centre.
  • Near the cardiothoracic entrance opposite the cardiothoracic centre car park.

Regent Point

  • There are three bronze level cycle parking located outside the assessment suite near Leazes Wing.
  • Outside the entrance to the Dental Hospital.

Multi-storey and Claremont Wing

  • Individual cycle lockers located in between the Mite building and New Victoria Wing entrance in the passageway.
  • Individual cycle lockers located in between the multi-storey car park and the Newcastle specials pharmacy production unit entrance in the passageway.
  • Individual cycle lockers around the side of the entrance to the Newcastle specials pharmacy production unit.

Bronze level cycle parking

  • Located in between the multi-storey car park and the Newcastle specials pharmacy production unit entrance in the passageway.

Peacock Hall and clinical resources building

  • Outside Peacock Hall main entrance.
  • Outside the entrance to the clinical resources building.

New Victoria Wing

  • Individual cycle lockers located in between the Mite building and New Victoria Wing entrance in the passageway.

Bronze level cycle parking

  • Outside the New Victoria Wing main entrance off Queen Victoria Road.
  • Underneath the foot passage between Peacock Hall and New Victoria Wing.

Top tips to secure your bike

You must make sure your cycle is locked securely as bike thieves target large workplaces. Bike thieves operate throughout the city and at the RVI in particular.

Our cycle parking security levels vary, however all bikes should still be locked securely.

  1. Lock your bike with two locks – The most secure way to lock your bike is with two locks. The first lock should go around the back wheel, the frame and the bike rack. The second should go around the front wheel, the frame and preferably the bike rack as well. If you use two different types of lock anyone trying to steal the bike would need to have two different types of lock-breaking tools.
  2. Lock your frame – Lock your frame to the cycle stand. A thief can easily remove a wheel.
  3. Keep your lock off the ground – You should keep your lock off the ground as a hammer can smash the lock, or the ground can be used as leverage for bolt cutters. Ideally the lock should go high up around the down tube or the seat tube.
  4. Make the lock difficult to access – Position the lock so the keyhole is facing downwards to make it more difficult to tamper with the locking mechanism.
  5. Fill the inside of a D-lock – If you’re using a D-lock, try to fill as much of the space within the D with the bike and the bike stand. This prevents leverage attacks as there’s no spare room inside the D.
