The RVI’s CQC rated ‘Outstanding’ Emergency Department is the gateway to the Great North Trauma and Emergency Centre – one of only twelve major trauma centres in the UK with the expertise to treat both adults and children.
The centre couldn’t provide the exceptional care it does without the experienced, talented multi-disciplinary team and we are currently looking for confident nurses who enjoy thinking on their feet whilst under pressure and are passionate about delivering a high standard of patient care in complex and rapidly changing situations.
No two days are the same
Patients of all ages present at any time of the day or night with a diverse range of illnesses, injuries and other health care needs at Newcastle’s Emergency Department.
You never know what’s coming through the doors which means the working environment is unpredictable and at times extremely challenging – one minute things are calm but busy, then a trauma case arrives and you find yourself working in a cohesive multi-disciplinary team, working together to manage an urgent, crisis situation.
Unique skills
Emergency nursing demands a unique set of skills. Trauma patients’ conditions can be complex and life threatening, requiring emergency specialists to quickly stabilise them, minimising pain and discomfort, and our nurses are often evaluating and treating patients at the same time, whilst working with colleagues from other departments to ensure the patient receives the highest quality care.
You need to be able to adapt, think out of the box and remain calm under pressure – especially during rapidly changing situations – whilst remaining compassionate and caring at all times as patients are often very scared, with needs which may not be apparent when they first arrive.
Our nurses oversee non-trauma admissions, and have continuous contact with their patients making decisions that align with hospital protocols and clinical orders so excellent communication and clinical skills are a must.
What we offer
By joining our team in Newcastle you will gain experience in every specialty, learning how to triage patients according to the presenting complaint and determine their need for treatment.
This will enable you to enhance your clinical knowledge, intuition and decision-making skills and you will learn to assess and deliver complex care to multiple trauma victims, some who require lifesaving interventions.
All new staff jointing us undergo a local induction and work closely with our Clinical Educator. Once you have completed the induction and all the necessary competencies you will manage a specific patient group, rotating through all areas of the Major Traumas area and become more autonomous in your role.
You will be part of a large multi professional team supported by senior nursing team – there are so many experienced specialists around you, there will be something new to learn every day.
There are excellent opportunities with our staff often progressing into advanced clinical, education or leadership and management roles within the department and across the Trust
Emotional support
Sadly some of our patients do not survive their injury or illness and we need to support the patient and their family at one of the most difficult times of their lives which can be extremely distressing for everyone involved. However, even when delivering bad news, supporting families through their darkest hours with compassion and empathy can have a really positive impact.
And of course such situations can be emotionally demanding for our staff. You will undoubtedly encounter difficult situations and witness the impact on your patients and their families.
Whilst our ethos very much revolves around our patients who remain at the heart of everything we do, in line with the trust’s Vision and Values, we are very mindful that emergency nursing is extremely challenging, especially right now.
We recognise the importance of supporting staff and their wellbeing, and endeavour to provide a safe and supportive environment to enable our teams to develop and grow, as well as learning how to tap into and build personal endurance and resilience.
