North of Tyne ME/ CFS Service

The North of the Tyne NE/ CFS Service is made up of secondary care (hospital)-based diagnostic team, the community-based rehabilitation and management team and paediatric service.

Welcome to the North of Tyne ME/ CFS Service

We are made up of:

  • The secondary care (hospital)- based diagnostic team.
  • The community-based rehabilitation and management team.
  • A paediatric service.

Meet the teams

North of Tyne ME/ CFS service (adult):

  • Medical lead: Dr Brendan Payne
  • Patients are also seen by other medical consultants from the Infectious Diseases Team, based at the RVI.
  • Therapy lead and specialist psychologist: Dr Evelyn Jannetta
  • Cognitive behavioural therapist: Dr Luis Salayandia
  • Specialist physiotherapists: Matthew Chase, Elaine Nyman

Paediatric ME/ CFS service (under 16s):

  • Consultant: Dr Neil Davidson
  • Specialist physiotherapist: Victoria Harbottle
  • Specialist psychologist: Dr Heather Borrill

Services for people with chronic fatigue

North of Tyne ME/ CFS service:

  • Offers medical assessment for adult patients with suspected ME/ CFS
  • Offers therapy for adult patients with ME/ CFS
  • Paediatric ME/ CFS service
  • Offers medical assessment for children and young people (aged under 16) with suspected ME/ CFS
  • Offers therapy for children and young people (aged under 16) with ME/ CFS
  • Young people who require ongoing help will be offered transition into the adult service at age 16-18

We are the service you need if you are looking for a diagnosis of ME/ CFS, or for help with management.

We are not able to offer support for people with fatigue with a clear cause (such as persistent pain, MS, primary sleep disorders, mood disorders…).

Chronic pain services

  • Patients with chronic pain often also have significant fatigue symptoms.
  • If chronic pain is the major symptom, you should be seen in the chronic pain service.

Northumberland (JMAPS) – You may need a GP referral into this service.

Mental health services

Patients with mental health difficulties (such as depression) often have significant fatigue symptoms

  • Mental health difficulties are treated by your GP or your community mental health team
  • We are not able to treat active mental health difficulties in our chronic fatigue services.

Sleep service

  • Patients with sleep disorders often have significant fatigue symptoms

The Sleep Service assesses and treats patients with obstructive sleep apnoea and other sleep disorders.
