Pre-assessment clinic (PAC)

Prior to undergoing a planned surgical procedure, you will be seen or initially assessed over the telephone by a member of the nursing team from our Pre-Assessment Clinic.

Checking blood pressure

What to expect from your pre-assessment clinic appointment

During your appointment, a member of the nursing staff will:

  • Complete a health questionnaire with you
  • Complete some simple observations such as your blood pressure, height and weight
  • Take some skin screening swabs

You may also have:

  • Blood tests
  • A heart tracing performed (ECG)

If you are having major surgery, you may be asked to attend for a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET).

Our pre-assessment clinic is supported by 13 of our consultant anaesthetists. They provide clinical advice and you may meet them face to face.

This may be to discuss your care in more detail, to review existing medical conditions, to discuss the risks associated with a particular surgery or to look at how we can get you as fit as possible to undergo surgery.
