This clinic is for patients who are referred to be seen by a consultant nephrologist, who specialises in kidney disorders, for the first time.
There are many reasons why you may be referred to see a kidney doctor. Examples include high blood pressure, blood or protein in the urine discovered at a routine check up, reduced levels of kidney function demonstrated on a blood test, recurrent urine infections and if you have family members affected by certain types of kidney disorders. This clinic is the first step in the assessment, investigation, diagnosis and management of a possible kidney disorder.
This clinic is held twice weekly at the Freeman Hospital and weekly at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
You will be seen by one of eight of our consultant nephrologists who may be assisted by a specialist trainee.
What you can expect
You will be asked to provide a urine sample for testing and your weight, height and blood pressure will be recorded by the clinic nurse before your consultation with the doctor. Afterwards you may have blood tests and an ultrasound scan of the kidneys.
Please bring a list of your medicines with you. A detailed letter will be sent to your GP and you will be asked if you would like a copy for your records.
