The bronchiectasis service investigates, diagnoses and treats the long-term condition bronchiectasis, which effects the airways of the lungs.
Bronchiectasis causes extra mucus to develop in the airways, therefore making you more likely to get an infection.
What can the Bronchiectasis service help with?
The bronchietasis service can help you to understand your condition and treat the causes. In addition to this, we can also help to:
- Minimise your daily symptoms and reduce flare-ups
- Self-manage your condition
- Reduce hospitalisations
- Make personalised choices about your treatment
- Participate in research
Tests we carry out
We carry out tests so we can see how your lungs may be affected by the condition, including:
- X-ray
- High resolution CT scanning
- Detailed lung function tests
- Microbiological assessment
- Gene testing for Cystic Fibrosis
How we treat your condition
We aim to reduce the severity and frequency of flare ups in order to help you preserve lung function. We focus on three components to treat Bronchiectasis, these are:
- Infection
- Airway inflammation
- Mucous retention
Research
We work closely with the Sir William Leech Centre for Lung Research to develop new treatments and gain further understanding of Bronchiectasis.
Our recent research projects include:
- Lungs and ageing: do the lungs of people with Bronchiectasis age differently to other people’s lungs?
- Inhaled antibiotics: what do patients understand and want from their treatments?
- Inhaled antibiotics: looking at alternative ways of giving inhaled antibiotics in bronchiectasis.
- Reduction of flare-ups: reducing inflammation in the airways in patients with bronchiectasis and other lung diseases.

Referral to our service
You will be referred to the service by your GP. You can see any of the consultants that specialise in chest conditions. However, Dr De Soyza, Consultant Respiratory Physician, has a specialist interest in this area, his clinic is on a Wednesday.
