Short Contact Dithranol

You have been prescribed Dithranol to use. It is very important that you follow the instructions given precisely as Dithranol used incorrectly can make the skin very sore. If you have any doubts or questions be sure to ask.

What do I need to know?

You have been prescribed Dithranol to use. It is very important that you follow the instructions given precisely as Dithranol used incorrectly can make the skin very sore. If you have any doubts or questions be sure to ask.

  1. The nurse in the department will show you how to apply the dithranol before you leave.
  2. As far as possible apply the ointment only to affected areas, not all over the body. Use it only on the trunk and limbs. DO NOT use it on the face, genitalia, folds, (armpits, groin) or scalp – it will cause irritation.
  3. Leave it on for 15 minutes only.
  4. Remove the ointment as you have been shown using:-
    • Paper towel and water with diluted washing up liquid
    • Rinse the solution off and rinse the bath out
    • Shower, bath, wash all overwith EpadermOintmen
    • Apply Epaderm after drying to lubricate the skin
  5. Dithranol stains the bath, walls, floors, curtains, etc so be very careful. Wash the bath immediately after you come out with a bleach cleanser.

6.  If your skin is sore do not use the dithranol. Wait until the skin has settled, or you have been reviewed in the department by the nurse.

Important information

This is a paraffin-containing product and there is a danger that smoking or being near a naked flame can cause it to catch fire, in particular if it is covered by a dressing or clothing.

To minimise this risk:

  • Do not smoke, use naked flames (or be near people who are smoking or using naked flames) or go near anything else which may cause a fire whilst these products are in contact with your skin. 
  • Ensure that your clothes and bedding are changed regularly as the paraffin soaks into the fabrics and can potentially be a fire hazard. You should also be careful to make sure that the paraffin does not soak into chairs, seating or other furniture.
